Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder

Synopsis:
About to be executed for murder, Yelena is offered a reprieve. She'll eat the best meals, have rooms in the palace, and risk assassination by anyone trying to kill the Commander of Ixia. And so Yelena chooses to become a food taster. But the chief of security, leaving nothing to chance, deliberately feeds her Butterfly's Dust, and only by appearing for her daily antidote will she delay an agonizing death from the poison. As Yelena tries to escape her dilemma, disasters keep mounting. Rebels plot to seize Ixia and she develops magical powers she can't control. Her life’s at stake again and choices must be made. Review:
Wow. I do not know the right words to praise this book correctly. Powerful writing, powerful plot, and powerful characters make this story come alive. It is remarkable.

Snyder’s writing is so captivating, it was impossible to close this book, even for the shortest second. The first-person point of view is done flawlessly. You become Yelena; you are in her world, her actions are your own, and her train of thought is yours.

The story line was just as magnificent as the writing. It is a complicated story with a cast of many characters. Never will you know what event will occur next. There is a constant stream of puzzles, actions, and secrets.

And the characters! The characters were all wholly individual and so perfectly developed. I did not wonder what the author would make the characters do next; I wondered what the characters themselves would do next. The characters’ secrets and the interpretive meanings behind their actions made the development of each and every character immaculate.

I could go on and on about this book, but probably should stop there. If you haven’t read Poison Study yet, I would encourage you to do so as soon as possible. If you didn't catch on from my review: It's freaking amazing!!!
